Improving the quality of education in the Andean pueblos in the Land of the Incas: Peru

About Us

Yatay is an organization with the mission of providing opportunities for Andean children to thrive in education, music, and arts. As a nonprofit organization, we strengthen the educational level of children and adolescents in the most economically disadvantaged areas of Peru. Since 2011, we have partnered with the Business Professionals of America (Lima chapter) and the Music Honor Society (Tri-M Modern Music Masters) to level the playing field for the kids of Pampas Grande, Huaraz, Ancash. Yatay (Quechua) means to share, to play, and to give. We measure our impact by reducing school dropout rates, providing job training, raising the professional quality of teachers and encouraging maximum parental participation. Yatay Peru was founded by Pedro David Espinoza in 2011 when he was a high school student in The American School of Lima, Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

History

Thanks to the leadership from Pedro David Espinoza, he recruited Miguel Kantor, Carlos Vallejos, and Alex Fischman to lead the organization. Together they went on a community service trip in 2012 to the pueblo of Pampas Grande at 12,400 feet above sea level. During this mission trip, the team provided musical classes, English training, and shared their life testimonies to inspire the underserved youth to pursue higher education. Yatay has received sponsorship from the High School director and principal Mr. Chris Akin and Mr. Horsington.  Another faculty member who sponsored and supported Yatay was Mr. Dublin the International Baccalaureate music teacher. Mr. Felipe Calderon was the faculty leader during our 2013 trip to Pampas Grande with Pedro Sanchez as the student leader.
